Just got an HD video camera.  I was trying it out with Pan Dragon last week.  We are on a beam reach in 22 kts of wind, full sail.  We were flying along at about 7-8kts.  FUN!!

Click on the link, and be sure to check it out in 1080P if you have the bandwidth!

Kevin,
I was watching your great video once again, (15 degrees and snowing here in Buffalo) and noticed you have a snap shackle and a line off of the end fitting on your club foot boom around the top pin.  What is that line for?
Thanks...

Hi Dale,

That would be the topping lift.  When the sail is furled I can crank down the sheet to completely stabilize the boom.  No vibrations.

Good eye!

Kevin,

Ok, that makes sense because you have a furler on that staysail and your halyard is always in use.  I use my staysail halyard to do the same thing when it is not in use.
Thanks...

Love it!

I like the furler on the stay sail. How is the clew set up so it can be released to bring the sail in?

kevin barber

Leo-  The clew out haul is lead parallel to the furler line to the cockpit.  I can deploy or furl the stay-sail without leaving the helm.
I may have photos if you need them.

Leo,

Not to answer for Kevin, but we too added a staysail furling system and love it. In Kevin's video I noticed his set up as well... Very nice... You can see the set up on Sea Dragon at:

I have since cleaned up the layout a little inspired by what I saw in Pan Dragon's video.

Leo-  I found an old photo that shows where my controls lead.

The blue line is the furler, the red is the clew.  I have never needed a winch to furl the stay sail.

Garner, Kevin,

OK, I did it, I ordered a furler for the stay sail. Now I need to get with my sail maker and get him going. Any suggestion on the sail? And what were your dimensions of your stay sail? cloth weight?

Leo

SailingSeaDragon

Leo,

You will love having your staysail on a furler.... Below you will find a link to Sea Dragon's Sailplan which includes the sail dimensions... I do not have the cloth weight with me but I am guessing it is 6.5 oz (Just a guess). My staysail is the only original sail on the boat... My plan was to replace it this winter, but I think it maybe time to hunker down and watch the pennies..

May Kevin will have more information.

I think Garner is probably right about the cloth weight.

My dimensions match up with the information on Garner's site.

Thanks so much for having all of that published!

What a great resource!
