Hmmmm

COnsidering that 11K engine being discussed under the mechanical section, I wonder if it would not be worth it to buy a kit and lock it away for the rainy day when I may need it - kind of an insurance policy.

The trick is to keep it from rusting. Most of us do not have a really good place to store internal engine parts. To store it long term, it would have to be in climate controlled dry storage. Many times I got parts from customer's storage to use on their engine and then found them to be rusted beyond use. It would be a shame to spend the bucks now and then when you need the parts, they are not usable. Humidity is usually what gets them. I have found that air conditioning is not always enough- you really need a dehumidifier.

 I have a good case right in front of me this week. Our guys last week tore down one of our 2,000 hp gas compressors for overhaul. I got the box of parts back from the machine shop today (Pandora's box). The compressor has been tarped, but it is outside. Those guys wiped the crankshaft down to inspect it, but did not put anything on it to protect it. I'm going to be polishing I hope only for the rest of the day. Highly machined parts will literally rust as you watch if they are not well protected. This shaft is only about $300,000.00...
